Chicago travel guide. Learn about the city’s diverse neighborhoods, incredible architecture, amazing food, and more. Plan your trip now!
As one of the most popular destinations in the United States, Chicago has a lot to offer travelers.
What makes Chicago a unique destination is that it’s in the heartland of America, with nearly equal distances to other big cities like New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Seattle, and others.
In this guide, I will cover when to visit, where to stay, what to eat, as well as things to do, what to avoid, and more.
So, if you’re planning a trip to the Windy City, then get your paper and pen out because I have a ton to share.
Chicago Tourism
Chicago is a city with a great cultural scene, beautiful neighborhoods, and incredible architecture.
The city is on the shores of Lake Michigan and has stunning lakefront views, a variety of outdoor activities, and a distinctive skyline.
As a result, the city draws over 50 million tourists a year, generating nearly $50 billion a year.
Of course, most Americans associate the city with its architecture. It’s home to masterpieces like the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower) and the John Hancock Center.
The Loop, Wicker Park, and Logan Square are all unique neighborhoods that have a distinctive atmosphere to them.
Meanwhile, travelers love Chicago because it has a ton of things to do. As synonymous with blues and jazz music, Chicago’s musical heritage is on display in various venues.
Likewise, the city is a sports enthusiast’s paradise, home to iconic teams like the Chicago Bulls (NBA), Chicago Bears (NFL), and Chicago Cubs (MLB).
Similarly, food abounds in Chicago, with its deep-dish pizza and Chicago-style hot dogs being tourist favorites.
Art lovers always appreciate the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the oldest museums in the United States.
Plus, Chicago experiences distinct seasons, including the city’s famously windy weather. That said, though, the Christmas season is truly beautiful here.
So, whether you’re wandering through museums, enjoying lakefront activities, or savoring the local food, your Chicago travel can be super memorable.
Before Going to Chicago
As the Midwest’s largest city, Chicago travel is a chance to enjoy some iconic architecture, cultural uniqueness, and colorful neighborhoods.
Like any other destination, though, there are a few things to be aware of before packing your bags.
First of all, you should know that non-Americans require a passport, and a visa may be necessary.
Of course, citizens of many areas of the world, including the European Union, do not require visas.
O’Hare International Airport (ORD) serves as a major gateway, with nonstop flights hauling passengers from global destinations.
Your taxi drive from the airport to Downtown Chicago will be less than $75 and won’t be more than 30 minutes.
Also, ridesharing apps like Uber are widely available across Chicago, including at the airports.
Trains are way cheaper at $5 and run 24 hours, and all you have to do is jump on the Blue Line and head to Downtown.
Meanwhile, the city operates on Central Time, being 2 hours behind New York and 1 hour ahead of Los Angeles.
While the official currency is USD, foreign credit cards find widespread acceptance… as long as they are through Visa, MasterCard, et cetera.
Likewise, foreigners can withdraw U.S. dollars from most ATMs as long as they are within certain networks.
Banks in the United States use networks such as Allpoint, MoneyPass, New York Currency Exchange (NYCE), Pulse, and STAR.
Check prior to leaving to ensure your bank card works here.
It also goes without saying in that you should get a travel medical insurance.
Finally, no matter how tempting, do not get into anyone’s vehicle unless they are clearly licensed to be your taxi!
Best Time to Visit Chicago
The best time to visit Chicago is during the summer, from June to August when the city comes alive with outdoor festivals, lakefront activities, and pleasant temperatures.
As a result, summer is the ideal season for exploring diverse areas of this great city. Everything will be green, Chicagoans will be out and about, and you will love your Chicago travel.
While spring and fall do show different sides to the city’s beauty, they also tend to be colder than many regions globally.
For example, Chicago spring can be pretty cold until April or May! This sucks because it means missing Chicago’s famous Easter.
Likewise, Chicago’s fall or autumn can “feel” like winter and as early as October! This sucks because there are nice holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Winter, however, this city is exceptionally cold, with freezing temperatures and the more-than-likelihood of snow.
Of course, that’s unfortunate because Christmas is really a beautiful time in Chicago. The city has a ton of local traditions around the holidays.
That said, while summer is a perfect balance of warmth and colorful cultural events, keep in mind that the other seasons have a lot to offer, too.
Where to Stay in Chicago
Your Chicago travel is full of places to choose from, and it really is all about your personal preferences and what fits with your needs.
For a modern city experience, Downtown is ideal, featuring iconic architecture, theaters, and easy access to cultural attractions.
This is perfect for those of you who are coming to Chicago to enjoy the museums and the famous Chicagoan food or to be in modern life.
Lincoln Park is a tranquil escape with nature and lakeside views, blending green spaces with city living.
For those of you who are into jogging, biking, or even swimming, Lincoln Park will never disappoint you.
Art enthusiasts will find inspiration in Logan Square, known for its colorful artistic community and eclectic vibe.
Logan Square thrives as an artistic hub and has a ton of galleries, street art, and creative spaces that contribute to its atmosphere.
Chinatown is the second-largest of its kind in the U.S., where historic charm meets authentic cuisine.
Honestly, the food here is so authentic, and you will love the history behind the neighborhood as you talk to the locals.
So, each neighborhood, from the urban buzz of Downtown to the artistic vibes of Logan Square and the cultural immersion in Chinatown, means a unique backdrop for a memorable stay in Chicago.
Food in Chicago
In Chicago, the food scene is a direct reflection of the city’s diverse influences. As a Chicagoan, deep-dish pizza and Chicago-style hot dogs are iconic local favorites.
Also, try Chicagoan yummies like Italian beef sandwiches, Maxwell Street Polish sausages, and Garrett Popcorn.
The city is home to a large African American community, and South Chicago is dotted with great many soul food restaurants.
Pearl’s Place Restaurant, Roy’s Soul Food, and LIL Country are some to put on your list!
Of course, American cuisine thrives with classic diners serving hearty breakfasts and steakhouses offering prime cuts.
Popular Americana diners like IHOP and Denny’s are scattered throughout the city, which means easy access to a cheeseburger if you fancy.
Meanwhile, global flavors flourish in neighborhoods like Pilsen with its Mexican eateries. I lvoe Taqueria Los Comales Pilsen.
Likewise, Argyle Street in Uptown has some amazing Vietnamese joints. I adore Cafe Hoang.
Similarly, Broadway in Edgewater is great for Ethiopian spots. I absolutely love Tesfa Ethiopian Cuisine.
Finally, Chicago is home to over 20 Michelin-starred restaurants, meaning you can have some gourmet stuff, too.
Smyth, Alinea, and Moody Tongue are some of the best high-end restaurants to try.
Chicago Attractions
Your Chicago travel gives you access to a range of iconic tourist attractions. For example, Millennium Park is a downtown gem that hosts the famous Cloud Gate sculpture.
The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the country. The Aztec Stone of the Five Suns is probably my favorite piece of art that they have.
Meanwhile, Navy Pier, extending into Lake Michigan, has entertainment, shops, and the famous Ferris wheel.
For a little higher in the sky, Willis Tower Skydeck has breathtaking views of the city from its glass-floored observation deck.
Of course, the Magnificent Mile is a great place for upscale boutiques and cultural institutions.
Also, the Shedd Aquarium is home to diverse marine life, Chicago’s sports culture thrives at Wrigley Field and the United Center, and cultural neighborhoods like Chinatown add to the city’s allure.
Finally, Lake Michigan is a great attraction, and you can rent boats or go on a water taxi to enjoy the views in and from this gigantic lake.
Day Trips from Chicago
For your Chicago travel, I invite you to go on day trips to explore nearby attractions.
For example, head to Milwaukee, just 90 miles north, to visit the Harley-Davidson Museum or the historic Third Ward.
Likewise, you may travel on the scenic Great River Road to reach Starved Rock State Park for hiking and waterfalls.
Similarly, Michigan City, Indiana, along Lake Michigan, is a relaxing beach getaway with the picturesque Washington Park.
Meanwhile, you could also visit Galena, with its 19th-century architecture and boutique shops, around a 3-hour drive from Chicago.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Indiana Dunes National Park is an opportunity for hiking and nature exploration.

On the final day, head to Galena for boutique shopping, completing your diverse week-long Chicago experience.
What to Avoid in Chicago
For your Chicago travel, I have a few things I would like you to avoid. First of all, exercise caution in certain areas, particularly parts of the South and West, where crime rates are higher.
Likewise, avoid displaying valuables openly, especially in crowded spaces, and be mindful of your surroundings on public transportation.
Similarly, check local weather conditions to prepare for the city’s variable climate. If you choose to come in winter, stay updated on potential traffic disruptions and road closures.
While exploring neighborhoods, be aware of local guidelines and safety recommendations.
Of course, like I said previously, always use reputable transportation services and verify prices to avoid scams.
So, with awareness and common-sense precautions, you will enjoy your Chicago travel experience.
