Introduction to Thai Cuisine

Introduction to Thai Cuisine - Caravanzers

Thai cuisine is undeniably one of my preferred types of food. The different taste combinations provide a pleasurable feeling in the mouth, which is why it has gained worldwide popularity.

Popular dishes across the country have a perfect balance between sweet, sour, salty, spicy, and a hint of bitterness.

This unique flavor is achieved through the use of bold and aromatic spices. Some of these include chili peppers, ginger, galangal, garlic, and lemongrass. Thus, providing a distinct Thai taste that is difficult to resist.

In addition, Thai cuisine masterfully balances the tastes of sweetness, tanginess, and richness through the use of ingredients such as tamarind, lime juice, and vinegar.

Of course, there are a ton of dishes, but here are my favorites. Chok is a popular congee enjoyed for breakfast, while Khao Phat is a well-loved fried rice dish.

Other favorites include Khao Soi, a curry noodle dish, Kaeng Khiao Wan, the famous green curry, and Tom Yum Goong, a spicy shrimp soup.

Pad Thai is a widely popular salad, and for dessert, Khao Tom, a sweet sticky rice, and Thapthim Krop, a delicious ice cream, are top choices.

Cha Yen is a sweet iced tea, and it’s really popular in cities like Bangkok.

What has been very intriguing to notice is that this cuisine has been clearly influenced by Chinese and Indian cooking. There are a lot of historical and cultural connections between Thailand and these nations.

All in all, I would say that Thai cuisine is a fusion of flavors in perfect equilibrium.

Making Thai cuisine at home can provide a delightful and enjoyable culinary experience. Even if you come from a Western background, the great news is that you don’t necessarily require any specialized tools or equipment.

That said, though, owning a wok or a large frying pan can greatly assist in preparing stir-fried dishes.

So, to get the essential components of Thai cuisine, such as fish sauce, palm sugar, galangal, and lemongrass, you may need to visit an Asian grocery store.

Likewise, many larger supermarkets have an international section where these ingredients can be found.
