Solo Travel Intro
When discussing the best solo travel destinations, we need to look at several things.
First and foremost, the traveler is essentially “going there” alone. Unfortunately, this requires a particular focus on things like safety.
In other situations, traveling solo can be challenging for specific groups. For example, it’s tough for women to travel solo in some countries.
Similarly, there are countries where non-white travelers might experience difficulty.
Likewise, members of the LGBT+ community will have a hard time in many countries, even in the 21st century.
So, my recommendations consider all of that.
On the other hand, I also tried to be balanced. For example, I didn’t consider countries like Saudi Arabia, where a woman’s movement is seriously compromised.
That said, there are countries where traveling women have no problems but where local women experience high incidences of harm.
Countries like South Africa, which is on this list.
In other words, traveling solo is something to consider.
So, with that in mind, let’s check out some solo travel places.
Destinations in Africa
If you’re looking for a great solo travel destination, Africa is definitely a great continent to explore.
The best solo travel destinations in Africa are South Africa, Cabo Verde, and territories claimed by European countries.
South Africa is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes on the continent, and it’s also one of the countries where you can experience a safari.
“I feel one hundred percent safe here,” says Emily, a British traveler in Johannesburg. “And I felt the same way in Cape Town and Durban, too,” she adds.
Emily admits she was a little worried about coming down since South Africa holds the top spot for rapes. However, a chance encounter with another female traveler in Spain changed her mind.
Cabo Verde is an underrated paradise that’s perfect for a relaxing vacation. This country is home to some of the best beaches in the world.
“I’m really enjoying it here,” says Diogo, a Portuguese traveler in Santa Maria on the island of Sal. “This beach is really crazy!”
Diogo has also been to Santiago, the largest island.
And if you’re looking for more action, head to European territories like the Canary Islands, Madeira, Mayotte, and Réunion.
European territories tend to be islands and offer all the wonders that Europe has to offer… except in Africa.
Destinations in Asia
If you’re looking for some solo travel destinations in Asia, consider Thailand, Nepal, and Taiwan.
Each of these countries has a unique culture and beautiful scenery. You’ll also find plenty of activities to keep you busy, from hiking and exploring temples in Thailand to rafting and scuba diving in Nepal and snorkeling in tropical Taiwan.
“I can’t get over how beautiful Taiwan is,” says Elizabeth from Canada.
When I caught up with Elizabeth, she was hanging out in the middle of the country, in Yushan National Park.
And don’t forget the delicious food! Try the fantastic street food in Thailand or head to a traditional palace for a royal dining experience.
In Nepal, savor momos filled with vegetables and spices, or try naan bread stuffed with curried lamb.
“Nepal has been amazing,” says Kyle, an American. “It’s like India minus the crowds,” he adds.
Sadly, Kyle admits that Nepal is just as polluted as India.
And in Taiwan, indulge in all sorts of Taiwanese treats such as milk tea, black sesame ice cream, and shaved ice.
Destinations in Europe
If you’re looking for some amazing solo travel destinations in Europe, look no further than Italy, Germany, and Norway.
Each of these countries has a rich history and culture that will fascinate you, as well as stunning landscapes that will take your breath away.
You can explore the beautiful cities of Florence, Rome, Venice, and Milan in Italy. Or head to the coast and dip into the Mediterranean Sea. This is also a country with delicious food!
“Italy is definitely a beautiful country with an amazing history,” says Priya, an Indian traveler in Florence. “There are plenty of things to do here, from exploring ancient ruins to visiting the beaches.”
Priya had also been to the island of Sardinia, which she says was an incredible experience.
Germany is in the heart of the continent. It has some of the most popular attractions in Europe… like Berlin, the Black Forest, and the Bavarian Alps.
“I come here every year,” says Pablo, a Spanish traveler that likes to hike in the Black Forest. “Every time I go back, I feel like a changed man,” he adds.
And in Norway, you’ll find rolling mountains and picturesque fjords that are perfect for hiking or skiing. Plus, you will catch the great northern lights.
Each of these countries has something unique to offer solo travelers, so be sure to check them out!
Destinations in North America
There are many great solo travel destinations in North America. Some of the best include Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
Each country has its own unique culture and attractions that make it a great place to explore on your own.
Canada is known for its stunning scenery and is a really peaceful country. By far the best country in North America, especially in the summer.
“There are no words to describe Canada,” says Ming, a Chinese traveler who’s in love with British Columbia. “I’m seriously considering moving here,” she adds.
The United States is home to some of the world’s most famous tourist destinations, like New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami.
“New York is a city you must visit at least once in your life,” says Rodrigo, a Brazilian traveler. “You can spend weeks here and still not even see half of the sites.”
There’s a reason why New York City is the top tourist spot in the US, getting more travelers than any other city.
Mexico is full of beautiful beaches and lively cities like its capital. Its beaches are unrivaled worldwide and give you access to several climate zones!
Whether you’re looking for a quiet retreat or a bustling metropolis, each of these countries has something unique to offer solo travelers.
Destinations in South America
If you’re looking for some amazing solo travel destinations in South America, look no further than Peru, Argentina, and Curaçao.
All three countries have rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes. Peru is known for its Inca ruins, Argentina for its wine country, and Curaçao for its beautiful beaches.
“Something about Curaçao just soothes my spirit,” says Tamika, an American traveler. “It’s very calm, safe, and beautiful. I would recommend this country.”
If you’re looking for an adventure, head to Argentina.
“Buenos Aires is the place to go for a dance,” says Klaus, an Austrian traveler.
Klaus joined a tango class in the city, and he says he met the woman who has since become the love of his life.
But Argentina is more than just the capital. This is a country that’s literally on the edge of the world!
“I’m planning to visit Antarctica from here,” Klaus explains.
And if you’re looking for a place with rich history and friendly people, head to Peru and start your trip in the capital.
Peru is the country that’s home to Machu Picchu, one of our world’s wonders.
No matter what your interests are, these three countries have something for you!
Best Solo Travel Destinations – Final Thoughts
I’ve been traveling since I was a teenager, and some of my best solo travel destinations are on this list.
That said, I want you to know there are so many destinations in the world that I left out… simply because I couldn’t include them all in here.
For example, you will notice I left out the entire continent of Australia or Oceana, even though it’s definitely some of the most beautiful in the world.
So, do your due diligence and investigate to find your own.
